A small PSA: if you have occasion to call chez Writingortyping, we may now be reached via our cell phones. Cell coverage in our area finally improved to the point where we could (and did) tell Verizon where to get off. Since it seemed our home phone number was primarily used by pollsters and alarming prerecorded messages that started, "Don’t be alarmed!" I can’t say I will miss being landlined.
If you don’t know our cell numbers and should, shoot me an e-mail or leave me a comment.
ETA: I also have a skype account for people who have that preference. If you want the connectivity info, same drill applies.
So you’re using cable to connect? I have Verizon, so I have a landline, but I don’t have a phone connected to it. (I do have a phone in the house to connect to it in case all the cell towers fall down or something.)

Excellent! We basically use Verizon just for local calls and as a carrier for DSL, and even so we find Verizon annoying. I like having a back-up in case my cell goes out (D. doesn’t have one, just me), but Verizon sucks (expletive). We’ve only been here 3.5 months, and I’ve had to make at least 4 service calls to deal with them, and several billing calls. They STINK.
(My long-distance/cell company, the wireless folks and my internet service, by contrast, are all lovely folks. Hmm. Maybe we should investigate Skype…)

Yeah, Marilee – we’ve always had cable internet connectivity.
I have been without a landline since moving back to Illinois. It has only been a problem once -when I lost my phone. Of course, mysteriously, some of the same pollsters, etc… have found my cell number. But they are many fewer, for sure.

Andrea, you can report those pollster calls to your cell here.
